  9. To check if your keyword is competitive u can use Google Adwords tool to check the count(search volume) as well as competitors search volume for your keywords.

  10. Based on the emails and response you received and it's also matter of researching the number of searches done, which isn't totally accurate, but it can give *relative* numbers, and then checking how many pages are returned for the search at Google (and now, Yahoo). Beyond that, one of the most telling is to look and see who the competition is. If there aren't very many SEO'd sites it generally isn't as difficult to compete as in areas where it's obvious that sites have had "professional" optimization done or are using aggressive techniques.

  11. Competition generally means the number of results you get when searching for that particular term on a search engine. You'll have to factor in other considerations when deciding on the competitiveness of a keyword - the number of results it generates is only the beginning.

  12. There is no mystery in going after competitive keywords, they just require more time (for authority to develop), more content (to reinforce relevance) and more link diversity (to create the right link profile) for success.

    1) Perform a search query with the keywords “in quotes”. This is a quick way to assess the benchmark of exact match (how many sites are competing for the term).

    2) Perform an allinanchor check allinanchor:domainname.com , if it matches up, then you know that the exact match is fairly accurate in determining the barrier to entry.

    3) Find the top 3 sites and cross reference their age, back links and number of respective pages on the subject (SEO Quake is perfect for analysis).

If you see a page ranking for the phrase, other than the home page, then check the number of links pointing at it externally. Then analyze those links (with SEO quake) to see if they have authority. Most sites for moderately competitive phrases are only augmented by a handful of external links. Then it is merely a metric of quality, relevance and timing to outrank their page.
