Ok, you have a website. Someone does a search for a product or a word on Yahoo or Google. What determines where you come up in the results? Im more likely to click on a result on the first page even though theres 700,000 results. Is it the most hits or certain words on the main page or what?

  1. A lot of things factor into how a search engine decides to rank you for a keyword phrase. In no particular order:

    - Keyword relevance of the text on your page

    - Topical relevance of your website

    - How many other pages link to your page

    - How authoritative the pages are that link to your page

    - What anchor text is being used to link to your page

    - The structure/hierarchy of your page and/or site

    - The age of  your domain

    - 95% Google secret sauce

If you are truly interested in learning how to rank well in search engines, you could spend years studying and practicing search engine optimization (SEO), which is a specialized technical/marketing discipline devoted entirely to this subject.
