There was an era when teenagers were the ones winning Grand Slams. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are living examples; they are the only three women, who won Grand Slams as teenagers. Currently, the average age
of the top 10 women winning Grand Slams is 26.1.
More tellingly, the 2010 title winners are Serena Williams (28), Francesca Schiavone (30) and Kim Clijsters (27). Let’s take a look at the upcoming generation in tennis and assess whether any of new players could be future WTA tennis stars:
Daria Gavrilova- The fiery Russian: This 16 year old Russian is a winner of the U.S. Open 2010. Her game is mind blowing throughout the matches she plays, with the way she doesn’t give a single chance to her opponents to win a single point.
The strategy this young girl is using is usually implemented by players having over 20 years of experience.
Moreover, Daria Gavrilova struggled to reach the Ronald Garros final and won the tournament as well. Other than that, she won the gold medal in the Youth Olympic Games this summer.
She achieved the ITF No. 1 ranking on Aug 23, 2010. Daria Gavrilova and Irina Khromacheva were partners in the U.S. Open doubles, but unfortunately lost in the semi finals to Timea Babos and Sloane Stephens.
Beatrice Capra: This 18 year old young girl surprised everyone with her amazing performance at the U.S. Open 2010. She was the wild card entry at this tournament who had received her training from Evert Academy in Boca Raton.
This was her first senior Grand Slam Event, where she reached the second round fighting and defeating Karolina Sprem. Karolina Sprem comes in the top 100 players therefore it was Beatrice Capra’s first win over a top 100 tennis professional player.
But this American didn’t stop there, she went on to defeat the 18 seeded Aravena Rezai by 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 and struggled to reach the third round, where she was unfortunately defeated by the famous Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova defeated this young poster
girl with a love game.
Sloane Stephens: This American also amazed everyone with her extraordinary performance in her junior majors. She has a fantastic ITF junior circuit, as she started playing ITF junior in 2008. Where she won the runner-up trophy with her partner
Mallory Burdette.
Moreover she made it to the finals of the Grade A Orange Bowl, where Sloane Stephens the wild card finalist was defeated by her compatriot Christina McHale. But she didn’t give up and continued working hard throughout 2009, grabbing the single and double
titles at Grade 1 International Spring Championships. Later on she went to Italy to win her first Grade A Italian Open singles title.
Her performance was not bad at the U.S. Open 2010 as well, where she was a 4th seed and was defeated by the 14th seeded Jana Cepelova.
Kristyna Puliskova: This Czech player is on No. 6 according to the recent ITF junior rankings. The young girl accompanied by her sister, played with Martina Navratilova when she was in her early teen age years, which is a big achievement.
She hasn’t played much on the international junior level, but seems to be stepping up now this year.
She is recognized as one of the youngest Czech to win a junior Grand Slam. Day by day this innocent girl is making progress and working hard on her game. She has a strong forehand and backhand, forcing her opponents to commit errors. Her performance at the
Wimbledon was eye catching when she fought with her sister Karolina Puliskova and won the match.
Hopefully this player will prove herself in the future and will come out with more positive and winning results.
Karolina Puliskova: Another Czech and the twin sister of Kristyna Puliskova is on position 7 in the latest ITF junior ranking. Both the sisters make a good pair like Williams and are struggling hard in the doubles to win the hearts of their
fans and people out there.
Karolina Puliskova gave a smashing performance at the Australian Open by winning her first Grand Slam of the year. On the WTA tour, her ranking is 271.
