Ralph, Count of Vexin from Normandy, was a nephew of King Edward the Confessor, and travelled with Edward to England when he became King of England in 1042. Edward made Ralph the Earl of Hereford. Part of his newly acquired land was Ewyas on the Welsh borders and he became Ralph de Ewyas. The family expanded with branches to Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and East Anglia. They eventually ended up at Fenwick in South Yorkshire at the Follyhall, which they inherited by marriage from the Foliot family. In 1259 Sir John Ewyas, son of Sir Nicholas Ewyas married Cecilly Samlesbury of Samlesbury Hall, near Preston and became lord of Samlesbury.
The name has several variations: Ewyas, Deuyas, Dewyas, Devias, Denyas, Evias, Euias; but all are of the same root.
Any help greatly appreciated.
