Going to Rome in the summer and I want to spend some time by the coast.

Where is a good place to stay and does anyone know any decent coastal campsites?

  1. Ostia Lido is seaside and is part of Rome nice place.

  2. Avoid Ostia like the plague in the summer time as it is crowded and dirty. A little north of Rome is Santa Marinella which is lovely and heading South via Fondi to Sperlonga is beautiful and both are day trips from Rome. Also consider the lakes, although you will need a car to get to Largo Bracciano and Martignano.

I lived in Rome for 5 years and know what I am talking about!

The Italians don't really do camping. There is one campsite in Rome on the via Aurelia. For cheap accomodation try www.italialodging.com

  3. Santa Severa, Ladispoli. More to the south Anzio Sabaudia and Terracina

  4. anzio ( grotte di nerone or Rivazzurra, the best beaches) and nettuno ..i think Ostia is too crowded..

  5. You may like to try Ostia, its very convenient for Rome (c. 45 minutes by Metro). I holidayed there last year. The only downside is that much of the beach area is privately owned by hotels which means you have to pay to use them. There are some public beaches around though. The area is nice and there are plenty of camp sites around.

  6. Ostia is, in my opinion, a dump. True, it is convenient to Rome, but there's nothing nice about it at all. It's where Romans who can't manage to go any farther go. If you absolutely have to stay near Rome, at least go just south of Ostia to Torvaianica. Much nicer are the beaches farther south, from Terracina to Sperlonga. The water is much cleaner, too.
