  1. If you wish to travel to somewhere sandy from London within a 4 hr radius you have a lot of choices, within that time you would be able to reach just about anywhere from the Mid Devon coast along Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Sussex, Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and possibly up to the Lincoln coast.  Some of the better resorts and beaches you could aim for would be Torquay, Weymouth, Littlehampton, Rye for Camber Sands, Great Yarmouth, etc.

The only thing you really have to check is Engineering Works for the time you are here, remember that a lot of works are done on Saturdays and Sundays so choose where you would like to go and then log onto the local train operating companies website and check to make sure the services are not affected.  If you are planing a weekend down there also remember that August is a popular time and most Hotels and B+b's are booked early.

    Good Luck and have fun

  2. how about your local builders they have sand,

  3. Somebody mentioned Camber Sands, near Rye. I would recommend that one too. I think the beach is one of the best sandy ones in England. You really need to have a car to get there though - it's a little off the beaten track, and doesn't have any public transport as such.

Otherwise, Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate in Kent all have sandy beaches, and are on direct train lines from London. Broadstairs is my favourite, but seems to suffer with seaweed more than the others.

A couple of resorts with sandy beaches on the south coast are Bournemouth and Weymouth. Again you can get a direct train from London to both of those.

Just one word of warning; if the weather is good all beach resorts will be absolutely packed on a Saturday or Sunday!

The sites below should help a little...

  4. Choices are...Brighton, Worthing, Hastings etc (South Coast)

Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Dover etc (Kent Coast)

Southend, Shoeberyness, Clacton etc (essex Coast)

    Can't think of anymore

  5. Clacton-on-Sea, Essex has a great beach.

  6. Bournemouth is the best all-round destination, but it is not 'sweet' as in cute.  Once your there go either to Hengistbury Head and catch the land train to a nice quiet beach, a tiny ferry over to Mudeford Quay and a cooked seafood stall, - or go to Sandbanks, take the car ferry and as you get off you are on the best beach in the UK.  Google both for images and you'd have to plan the trip if using public transport.

  7. Brigton, about 100 miles south of London(get train). Where Simon Cowell was born lol.

  8. Well, no... you won't find any sandy beaches near London! The closest I would say is Southend... and it's not really nice (more like pebbles than sand!)

  9. The nearest "seaside" is probably Southend-on-Sea, but don't go there, it's horrible. It's not actually the sea, it's the mouth of the river Thames.

If you want proper seaside, you will have to catch a train to the south coast. Hastings is about 90 minutes from London by train and has a "real" seafront with a beach about 3 miles long. It's shingle though, not sand. Other places with beaches would be Eastbourne and Brighton, both with similar shingle beaches. Brighton has the most atmosphere. The only place I can think of in that area with a sandy beach is Camber Sands, near Rye.
