Season Review Week 1-7: New Orleans Saints – Part II
With two defeats in a row for the New Orleans Saints in the first two games of the season, things were looking bleak for the franchise.
However, the team’s problems were set to be exacerbated in the next two weeks as weeks three and four put up even more surprises for the Saints.
Week 3: Against Kansas City Chiefs
The New Orleans Saints were winless heading into week three but so were the Kansas City Chiefs who also had lost both of their games at the start of the season.
Facing an easy opponent this was a great opportunity for New Orleans to launch their season as they looked for their first home win of the season.
They started off brightly with Brees throwing three touchdown passes in the first three quarters to build up a big 24-6 lead.
The Chiefs were held without a touchdown and it seemed like the Saints were about to turn their misfortune around.
However, running back Jamaal Charles kicked off their comeback attempt with five minutes to go in the third quarter as he launched a mazy 91-yard run to the end zone and brought the Saints lead down to 11 points.
The Chiefs had much work to do still in the final quarter but the Saints poor defending gave them all the chances they needed to complete their comeback.
Kicker Ryan Succop scored three field goals in the final quarter including a 43 yarded in the dying seconds to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Saints fans gloomily watched on as Succop scored a 31-yard field goal in overtime to lead the Chiefs to a first win and doom the Saints to a third straight defeat.
Week 4: At Green Bay Packers
With their season going from bad to worse, the Saints faced a tough game against the Green Bay Packers.
Even a blown call by the officials could not help the Saints to their first win of the season in this game. The Saints managed to turn around Green Bay’s 21-14 first half lead in the third quarter and went up 24-21 thanks to quarterback Drew Brees who continued
his brilliant performances.
They further increased their advantage early in the fourth quarter and moved up to 27-21.
However, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers led his team to a touchdown with seven minutes left to give Green Bay the lead by just a single point.
The Saints were lucky that the officials missed a fumble by Darren Sproles letting them keep possession as the seconds ticked away.
That is where though their luck ended as Saints kicker Garrett Hartley missed his field goal attempt sending the Saints back to another defeat and 0-4 in the season.
