Season Review Week 1-7: New Orleans Saints – Part III
With four losses in a row the New Orleans Saints were reeling from one defeat to another with little going their way.
In week five they faced the San Diego Chargers while quarterback Drew Brees was approaching closer to breaking another big National Football League Record.
Week 5: Against San Diego Chargers
Quarterback Drew Brees got permission to have suspended head coach Sean Payton sit in the stands for this one from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Brees was on the way to break Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas' half-century-old record of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown and wanted his mentor to watch him do just that.
The Saints overall though did better than that.
Not only did Brees break Unitas record passing for a 48th consecutive game with a touchdown in the first quarter but the Saints went on to deliver a big performance to win their first game of the 2012/13 season.
The Chargers built up a 10-point lead early on in the third quarter but Brees was not going to let anyone ruin his big day.
Brees provided a touchdown pass in the dying seconds of the third quarter to make it 24-21 and completed the comeback in the final quarter with another touchdown pass to secure a massive 31-24 win ending the Saints four-game losing run and dissipating the
clouds of gloom that covered the Superdome.
Week 7: At Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After winning their first game against the Chargers, the Saints had a bye week in week six.
The rest was welcome as they faced NFC South division rivals Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week seven. For the Saints there was some good news heading into this game as linebacker Jonathan Vilma returned back in the roster after appealing his season long suspension.
Vilma’s return provided a boost to the Saints defence and his vocal presence on the field pumped up the Saints at the start of the game.
Tampa Bay were no easy opponent and made things difficult for New Orleans as they built up a 21-7 lead early on in the second quarter.
However, the Saints rallied with Drew Brees playing a big role passing for three second quarter touchdowns to put the franchise ahead by 28-21.
No scoring took place in the third but the Saints improved their advantage to 35-21 early in the fourth through running back Pierre Thomas.
Tampa Bay tried to mount a late comeback bid but could only score once more as the Saints won their second game in a row 35-28.
The Saints had won two games straight and things are now looking bright for the franchise for the games ahead.
