Season-ending LET battle gets underway with flurry of excitement
The Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012 has kicked off in Dubai with a flurry of excitement, with all the top-ranked Ladies European Tour (LET) stars looking to prove their worth in the season-ending battle.
The four-round tournament is being played from Wednesday December 5 to December 8, but the hype for the event has overshadowed everything, given that it is the final battle of the 2012 LET season.
Although the field is featuring stars like Spanish Carlota Ciganda, Caroline Masson of Germany and American Lexi Thompson, the initial results show that lesser-known players have made a much better start to their campaign.
With most of the players yet to complete their first round, Klara Spilkova appears to have posted the biggest score—67—while other prominent players include Nontaya Srisawang and Anne-Lise Caudal who both shot a 68 each.
Moreover, Felicity Johnson of England also displayed a stellar performance as she posted a 68 to find a second position on the leaderboard.
According to the latest results, big names appeared to be struggling to find better positions as they could not make the most of favourable weather and course conditions on Wednesday morning.
Despite a strong field that also includes young guns like Carly Booth of Scotland, the spotlight is likely to remain on Ciganda and Masson till the final moment of the tournament.
Masson did not participate in the last tournament—Hero Women’s Indian Open—so she is taking her game more seriously than before as she wants to finish off the season in grand fashion.
Masson currently stands at the second position in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit 2012, which means she will have to finish inside the top three in order to win the money title.
Any position inside the top three will give her enough money to win the coveted title.
Sharing her thoughts about the title that presently seems to be going Ciganda’s way, Masson said that if she manages to stay focused on the course, she can win.
“It would be a great accomplishment, no question, but as I say, Carlota has played well and she deserves to win, as well.  I think we are going to have a good battle out there,” the German golfer said.
