Season or no season, Cleveland Cavaliers will come out of NBA lockout as winners
The NBA lockout forges ahead with no real end in sight. It has already claimed the first month of regular season and if a deal is not reached anytime soon, whole season might be terminated.
NBA and players are expected to sit on the same table again coming Friday to find a solution. A mammoth $ 4 billion are on the line and if the season is wiped off, neither players nor NBA will benefit from it.
Fans are frustrated so are the players and everyone else linked to NBA. The way things are going, fans will even take the shortened season- it is better to have something than nothing at all.
Team owners that provided air to this labour dispute, have already won the battle so far depriving players of more than accumulated $ 1 billion in next six years but still their greediness has not faded one bit.
There are few owners that want the lockout to end because of the fact their teams are potential contenders for championship in the upcoming season. Like Miami Heat, that has spent a lot of money on acquiring the best players in
NBA. If this season is lost, one year of contract of the desired player will be slashed.
Then there are other teams like Cleveland Cavaliers being in the rebuilding phase, and destined to have yet another failed season therefore another high pick next spring. Why would such teams want a complete season?
In a complete season, the humiliation would be more as the Cavaliers would have to lose around 60 games to reach there. Whereas in case there is a shortened season, same destination is reached with less catastrophic record let’s
say 35-40 losses.
No I don’t mean, Dan Gilbert, owner of Cavaliers is complicating the negotiations on purpose because he has no interest in upcoming season, but it is obvious that small market owners are giving their best shot to acquire a seat
at the table in the high spenders room.
Cavaliers have a team of youngsters and there are no aging players on the roster. Few of them in the form of Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson have yet to play their first game in NBA so even if the season is lost, Cavaliers will
not be suffering much. They would still have fresh legs more motivated to make their debut after a long wait.
So it’s a pretty much win-win situation for the team. In case a deal is reached at 57-43, team will enjoy the luxury of more profits and even if it doesn’t, Cavaliers would still not be too bothered as they have a weak time, one
likely to end grab the last spot in the season.
