Seasoned punters - can you help?

I'm pretty new to this gambling lark, so I could do with some advice on the following;

Lucky 15 e/w and Tote placepot - Are these type of bets worthwhile? What should I be looking out for when selecting meeting/races/horses/prices for these types of bet?

If you could pick me some winners that would be great, but I would settle for some good general pointers!

Thanks.

  1. The Lucky 15 bet is a bookmakers fantasy - as its pretty difficult to win with at decent prices and provides them with a steady profit year on year.

Once you start looking at each way selections you have to look for value and higher priced selections to make it worthwhile. This method is more unpredictable in that respect.

Each way betting does provide a more consistent return - because of the higher strike rate but obtaining a profit is a another matter.

The Tote placepot is an interesting bet as you can potentially have a bet in every race. And its very popular with the public. It is difficult to master though. I would advise using small stakes. In addition it may be worthwhile using ratings as a guide in the racing press. The Daily Mail Formcast and Daily Express Computerman are good starting points.

Aiming to take account of the Draw bias and fitness of the animals is another avenue that can be useful.

In conclusion though I would say single win level stakes bets is the best route for profits and are used mainly professional punters.

    All the best Peter

  2. I am from Australia and what you just asked and the first guys answer sounds like total gibberish. We don't have those betting options in Aus, but my suggestion, pick a venue that you like or that is situated close to you and concentrate your betting on that venue. That way you get to know the horses that consistently run week to week or fortnightly and the form is easier to sort out. Read as much press as you can and follow any trials or jump outs which may take place. Trainers who have stable jockeys are good to follow but not just anyone they have to know their craft well. I mainly punt using win bets and don't be ashamed of backing more then one horse in a race as long as you scale your bets so you maintain your profit and you don't need to bet on every race a good punter knows when to bet and when not to. Finally bet on a day of the week that you have time to study the form closely and enjoy your punting.

P.S. To anyone saying that I was disagreeing or trying to say that Scotty's answer was incorrect or misleading, all I was saying that in Aust we don't have such a bet therefore it sounds like gibberish to me. I love this site but if I don't answer questions like this then I don't answer any questions as none of them include anything on Aust racing. There is one thing that I find has no borders, the fact that all punters think they know more then the next. If I can add one other piece of advice keep your punting to yourself or a close group of friends as someone will always try and bring you down. But thanks for your kind words and understanding.

  3. as you gain experience and lose money on all multiple bets, you will think to yourself 'why did i start punting?'. single bets may be boring, but will finish-up ahead each year. and don't bet in handicaps!

  4. scotty says what really needs to be said so i wont bore you with what i think of the bets but personally i tend to stay away from them and just back one horse when i fancy it.

if  i was doing a lucky 15 today (which im not) then i would be putting these two horses in the bet

    ROSE STREET 315 @ ripon

    HILBRE COURT 400@great lieghs

  5. Leroy...scotty and des are on the right tracks in answering the question.

Yahoo answers is such a great melting pot that we all get confused with the rules and regs of betting in the UK, Aus and USA, but this is definitely about betting in the UK

Lucky 15's are a popular combination bet of a choice of 4 horses to win, double, treble and accumulate thus giving a big return (if your lucky) it's a very good bet when it comes in (in my case not often enough).

scottys answer is spot on, so no more said....Jacqui x
