  1. there is an equinox in fall and spring, a solstice is the longest day of the year in the summer(june 21) and in the winter

  2. Solstice is the time of maximum or minimum inclination of the sun.Solstices occur on two days in a year-June 21 and December 21(this may vary by one or two days in some particular year). On 21st June, the sun is over the tropic of cancer(23.5 degree N) producing maximum daylength and it is summer for the northern hemisphere.Sun's inclination is minimum for northern hemisphere and maximum for southern hemisphere. The reverse  thing happens on 21st december (when the sun shines over tropic of capricon-23.5 degree S)which is winter for northern hemisphere. As this occurs only on two days in a year and are associated with summer and winter, they are called summer solstice(June 21) and winter solstice(21 December).Autumn and fall are only transit periods between summer and winter.

On these two days the equator is at its farthest point from the sun.

  3. In spring and fall we have the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox.....when the sun is directly over the equator.

the solstices are when the sun's angle is at the steepest angle 23.44 degrees north on the first day of summer and 23.44 deg south on the first day of winter.
