Seattle Mariners' manager Eric Wedge talks about Alex Liddi and squad’s position
Seattle Mariners' Manager Eric Wedge saw his young squad members do well against the Texas Rangers on September 25 at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The gaffer was pleased to see his club try hard as the hitters struck four homers in the encounter. They
were however outmatched by the home team as the Rangers pulled off four homers of their own to secure a satisfying 12-5 win over the visitors.
The Mariners looked strong with their hitting but their pitching and fielding was out of touch. Charlie Furbush picked up his tenth loss of the season and he was weak against the opposition as he allowed six runs off six hits in 4.1 innings of pitching.
Trayvon Robinson committed a fielding error in the bottom fifth to allow Ian Kinsler a run and Esteban German an odd home-run. The two runs came off a strange error and it was not the only incident that proved a difference in team strength. Kyle Seager committed
an error at short-stop in the bottom of the eighth to allow Kinsler home on a Leonys Martin single. The difference in team temperament and discipline was apparent.
"We're not in that game yet," he said. "These guys have a tremendous line-up. But we're working to be better offensively and better individually in every part of our team. Eventually, you put it together."
One man who impressed the gaffer a lot was none other than Italian born, Alex Liddi. The star third baseman smashed a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. The play allowed Justin Smoak to score a run as well.
"We've seen him make a couple good plays, not just today but in other games as well," Wedge said. "And obviously, if they make a mistake to the young man, he has the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark."
The Mariners are looking strong with their young roster. If they fix their pitching rotation and fielding, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the American League West.
