Seattle Mariners' reliever Oliver Perez gets a fresh one-year deal – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners have signed relief pitcher Oliver Perez to a one-year $1.5 million deal and kept the hopes alive for the entire Seattle of doing well in the next Major League Baseball season.
"I like it because I get a chance to play every day, I love to play the game. It's very exciting for me. I don't care whether we're winning or losing, for me it's the same thing. I love this game, so why not have fun? It's a job, but it's a game, too," Perez said at the time.
Perez proved his valour and remained consistent on 2.12 ERA along with 24 strike-outs and 1.25 WHIP.
Coming from a tough couple of seasons, Perez was settled in the Mariners’ roster in 2012. He joined the Mariners from their Minor League affiliates and kept on playing with consistency and remained part of the big team roster for rest of the season.
"He did a very nice job in helping solidify our bullpen after his call-up last summer, As a veteran left-hander and one that had adjusted very nicely to his new role, we are looking forward to his contributions as we go into the 2013 campaign," Mariners' general manager Jack Zduriencik.
Earlier when he joined the Mariners after spending almost one year with the Washington Nationals, many experts speculated that Perez’s true offensive game is yet to come.
He performed brilliantly with the Mariners' Minor League affiliates and proved his skills. As soon as he joined Seattle’s big team, the team showed positive thrust and started winning.
On the whole, Perez’s contribution won many games for the Mariners but on the other hand, the Mariners' senior players could not show any impressive plays which hurt them badly and as they finished at bottom in the American League West Division with 75-87 win-loss along with .463 winning percentage.
Meanwhile, since Perez and Mariners have re-signed, the baseball pundits rating Seattle side with best potential results next season.
Perez is also happy that he will be playing for one more year in the team where he truly established his offensive and tactical game.
