Seattle Mariners’ Anthony Vasquez doubtful for outing as hurler struggles against Texas Rangers
If there was anything Anthony Vasquez wanted on Friday, September 23 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, it was a Seattle Mariners win over the Texas Rangers. The rookie pitcher went up against the American League West leaders, only to lose 3-5 in the bout
and walk off the field after 3.1 innings of pitching.
Much to the disappointment of the fans and Manager Eric Wedge, the ball thrower was unable to restrain the Texan hitters as he went on to concede five runs from seven hits. His problem dealt with control. As the Mariners struggled against Rangers’ Matt Harrison,
Vasquez failed to rise on top against the hitters.
"I knew I had to keep the ball down and they're ready to hunt fastballs," the Seattle ball thrower said. "The biggest thing for me is I was up and I was behind. You can't do that with any team, really, especially these guys."
The player moved in to the Major Leagues after he was promoted from Triple A-Tacoma. He moved to the six man rotation in August and has so far failed to make a mark in the game. He is currently 1-5 with an earned run average of 8.89. The star youngster has
gone on to concede 12 home-runs, including three on Friday in just over 27 innings of pitching.
The player has one final outing scheduled for Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics at the Safeco Field. That schedule may not be set in stone yet as Vasquez might not play in the fixture.
"We'll see," said Wedge. "We'll see where we are with everything."
Vasquez has been weak against the Rangers and he has conceded six home-runs against the hitters in just over six innings.
"It's a product of him just not commanding the baseball," Wedge said. "That's his MO. That's what he's done in the Minor Leagues."
The Mariners may not use Vasquez in the long run if he does not do well in his next outing. The only thing to wait on now is whether the player pitches well against the Athletics or not.
