Seattle Mariners’ Eric Wedge reflects on Anthony Vasquez and Trayvon Robinson after 3-5 loss
The Seattle Mariners lost 3-5 on Friday, September 23 when the club went up against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The team owed much of their loss to Anthony Vasquez and Trayvon Robinson as the two players had the chance to change the
result of the game but it was not to be the case.
Vasquez went 1-5 on Friday as the hurler managed to give away five runs from seven hits in just 3.1 innings of pitching. The star hurler, who was promoted from Triple A-Tacoma in August, to be part of a six-man rotation, was the weakest link for the club.
He allowed three home-runs and all three carried the five runs. The ball thrower has now conceded six homers to the Rangers in just over six innings of pitching.
Craig Gentry, right-fielder of the Rangers, managed to pick up his first home-run in an awkward fashion as he ran all bases after Robinson and Mike Carp fumbled on an infield pop between them. The play cost the Mariners two delicate runs as the club managed
to pull three back in the sixth against Matt Harrison.
"Once I saw it get down I was excited to get something going," said Gentry, "but that was the last thing I expected coming around first."
Carp and Robinson dove at the ball and lost the time to react effectively. Wedge believes Robinson was at fault and should have rather backed up Carp in the assist, as he was further away from him.
"Carp is the guy that has a chance at that ball and Tray has to pull behind him," he said. "You can't both go for that ball right there."
With the team loss on the cards, manager Eric Wedge will hope the club’s problems can be resolved and that they could pull off a series win in the next two games. It will be interesting to see how the Mariners will be able to recover from this loss and improve
their performance before their next match-up.
