Seattle Mariners’ Eric Wedge talks about club after 0-3 loss to Texas Rangers – MLB Update
The Seattle Mariners had an opportunity to take out the Texas Rangers on Sunday, September 18, at the Safeco Field in Seattle but failed to do so, as they lost 0-3.
Manager Eric Wedge brought on Felix Hernandez to quell the opposition’s hitters. Unfortunately Matt Harrison was up to the task on the other end, as the Mariners went crashing out of the contest.
Hernandez conceded a two run homer in the top of the fourth to Adrian Beltre and a run to Ian Kinsler in the top of the sixth. Harrison did his best to put the Seattle hitters on the wall but he did leave the club a chance to climb in the bottom seventh
when he loaded the bases.
The team was unable to capitalise on the situation as Koji Uehara came in to cancel out the threat by striking out Luis Rodriguez. Wedge took time out to talk to the press after the game.
"When you hold a team like that to three runs, you like to think you have a chance to win a ballgame," said Wedge. "That's something that's glaring with us and something we got to continue to improve upon. At some point in time we've got to get to the point
where we are disciplined and can fight a little better with two strikes."
The Mariners are looking to field a young roster in the remaining games. Hernandez played his last game and ended the season on 14-13. His contribution with the ball has done little to help the club as there is little cover from the hitters. He is pitching
very well, but unfortunately he is not getting the support that he needs for the offence. Wedge is trying to groom the offensive line-up for the next season.
The Mariners are on the last spot of the American League West, while the Rangers are enjoying their time on the top. The clubs are bound to meet again soon this season. Pushing the young pitchers in could prove to work as an ideal strategy for the skipper.
