Seattle Mariners’ Greg Halman stabbed to death in Netherlands – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners out-fielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death in his native country Netherlands, in what has turned out to be the most intriguing controversy of this offseason. Earlier in the offseason, Washington Nationals’ Wilson Ramos was kidnapped by
criminals in Venezuela, before he was finally rescued by state authorities 51 hours later.
Halman was an extraordinary baseball talent and was currently on a European Tour, representing Major League Baseball and helping the sport grow in a region where it is not so popular. Before this tragic incident, Halman conducted baseball clinics in Italy,
Netherlands and the Czech Republic in an attempt to earn popularity for the sport and thus attract more people towards it. Unfortunately, he had to lose his life for his love for this sport.
Baltimore Orioles’ Rick VandenHurk was shocked by the news of Halman’s death and could not digest the incident. A close friend of Halman, Rick asserted that he was a childhood friend and that he was with him on the European Tour. Rick continued that Halman
was with him on November 13, after which he was scheduled to go to his apartment in Rotterdam.
Halman’s brother, Jason, was sharing the apartment with him and has been arrested since the day of the incident. However, Jason has not been charged for stabbing and it remains to be seen what the outcome of this case is.
VandenHurk could not end praising the baseball prodigy, who enjoyed a celebrity status in his native country. "He's very well known everywhere in Holland,'' VandenHurk said of Halman. "He was one of the biggest names that we have in baseball.''
An interesting development was Eelco Jansen’s comment that highlighted the fact that both brothers were inseparable. Jansen stated that both brothers were more than close to each other and it is shocking that Jason is under arrest. Greg’s mother did not
comment on the situation because of the depressing nature of events – death of one child and arrest of another.
Halman’s love for the sport cannot be challenged, but the incidents are disturbing and raise many questions. How things unfold in this curious case is yet to be seen.
