Seattle Mariners defeat Boston Red Sox 5-4 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners put in a good performance to defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park, Boston on Friday, April 29.
Jason Vargas mounted a brilliant defence to secure the fifth victory for the Mariners against Boston. The starting pitcher effectively pitched seven innings to win an unquestionably tough game. The home crowd certainly had little to celebrate this season
largely because their team’s performance is marred by uncertainty coupled with unpredictability.
The starting pitcher did not have any wins in his record for a considerably long period of time. "I didn't really realize how long it had been until I thought about it," Vargas said of his last win, which came on Aug. 14. "It's definitely nice to get a 'W'
and get rewarded for pitching a good game. It's just one of those things. We'll move on to the next one and hopefully get on a roll."
The team manager acknowledged his brilliance with a tinge of happiness. "I'll tell you, that's probably the most impressive three innings he's thrown all year," manager Eric Wedge said. “He's been pretty consistent for us, he's had some tough luck, but he
was really sniffing that one out and he threw as well as you can throw those last three innings, and that was great to see."
It was the offensive dominance that marked the beginning of the game, as the Mariners’ batters were supposed to go hard against Daisuke Matsuzaka of Boston and they did. Justin Smoak was the first to do it, as he hit a two-run single that gave an early 2-0
lead to the Mariners.
Vargas threw fast, but got a hit in the second inning by Mike Cameron who not only opened the account for Boston but brought the lead down to 2-1. Vargas gave up three hits in the third inning and allowed two runs which gave Boston a 3-2 lead. Kevin Youkilis
singled to left and David Ortiz singled to right to take the lead up.
Jason was then taken to task in the fourth inning by Cameron, as he homered to left to make it a 4-2 lead for Boston. However, Milton Bradley did his magic in the next inning, as he charged Matsuzaka to score a single, bringing the lead down 4-3. Vargas
was then exceptional after getting hits and four runs in four innings, as he threw fastballs that were beyond ordinary.
Once their defence got strengthened, the Mariners then had a new surprise to offer. This time it was their offence that was aggressive, as Miguel Olivo and Jack Cust scored a single each to snatch the 5-4 victory for the Mariners, leaving Boston in disarray
once again.
