Seattle Mariners defeat Florida Marlins 5-1 – MLB Update
The Seattle Mariners beat the Florida Marlins 5-1 on Friday, June 24 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington.
The win took the Mariners to .500 for the season with their win-loss record standing at 38-38.
The Mariners dominated the game which turned out to be a one-sided affair amid some steaming Felix Hernandez pitching. Hernandez pitched in for eight innings and meant business as soon as the game started. He conceded just two hits and leaked the sole run
coming for the Marlins.
Hernandez got the better of the Marlins’ hitters, striking-out ten for the night. His numbers are a treat to read, getting 118 strike-outs this season with his career strike-outs totalling 1160 at an impressive ERA of 3.19. His feat at Safeco Field earned
him his eighth win for the season and it has come at just the right time with the team needing some serious thrust for the remaining matches.
Ricky Nolasco started for the Marlins but his performance was average given his counterpart producing a class act. Nolasco pitched for seven innings and went for four hits and three runs. His four strike-outs did not come in handy for the Marlins and he
lost this game. His win-loss record is now 4-4. Nolasco will be looking to work on his ERA if the Marlins intend to make a mark in the League. An ERA of 4.44 is quiet high at this level. The Marlins have lost all of his last six starts and nine of his last
ten.
Nolasco, expressing himself to reporters said, "I told myself I can't give up a run if I want to win. I thought I made the pitches I needed to but couldn't catch a break when I needed to."
Ichiro Suzuki’s 11-game hitting streak came to an end but that didn’t hurt the Mariners much. Adam Kennedy, Dustin Ackley and Miguel Olivo contributed one-run each to add three runs in the seventh inning. Ackley and Olivo did not stop here, as Miguel let
one out in the stands to complete his 12th home-run of the season before Ackley added another run to complete the icing on the cake.
The only hitter to show resilience from the Marlins was Hanley Ramirez who added one run in the fourth inning. It was one of the only two hits which the Mariners and Hernandez conceded in the match. Brandon League, the relief pitcher for Mariners followed
what Hernandez accomplished and yielded eight strikes off his ten pitches. He did not concede a single hit in the entire inning, managing a sole strike-out in the process.
The Mariners now lead the three-game series 1-0. The Marlins will be looking to stage a serious comeback on June 25 to light up the series, if not their League record.
