Seattle Mariners defeat Los Angeles Angel 3-1 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners finally put an end to their streak of defeats on Wednesday, June 15 to beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 at Safeco Field, Seattle.
The struggling Mariners’ defence was demonstrably different and one that had vowed to prevail.
"We made some really good defensive plays," Erik Bedard said. "That's the only reason we're there talking about a win right now. You've got to give it to the defense today."
Undergoing woefully difficult times lately, the Mariners put a wonderful team effort to cruise past the otherwise well-established Angels. Seattle Mariners had lost the last two games by 6-3 and 4-0, intensifying concerns over the future of the team.
On Wednesday, Bedard provided a strong start to the team by pitching a scoreless first inning that saw two hits following one-hit inning of Ervin Santana. The two pitchers pounded the rival teams’ defence and remained effective simultaneously.
As the game progressed, neither of the two starters seemed in any mood to allow the hitters to open their account. In a game that was seen as pitchers dominated, Carlos Peguero brought an ultimate transformation.
When Santana came to pitch the seventh inning, little did he realise, or his team predicted as a whole, that it would be Peguero who would go for game turner. Peguero hit a magnificent two-run homer to give the Mariners an eagerly awaited 2-0 lead in the
game.
“This dude has a lot of luck," Hunter said of Peguero. "We were here last time, the sun ball and now the second base bag. I need to take him to the casino. I think we could win.”
Once the lead was established, Mariners opted for David Pauley as a reliever who was to replace Bedrad. Pauley’s arrival resulted in the Angels’ change of tactics that seemed to work out well.
Erick Aybar was sent to face Pauley. Aybar capitalised on the opportunity to single to right, bringing the Mariners’ lead down to 2-1. As the game entered its most exciting phase, the Mariners found themselves in a bit of trouble.
However, the otherwise grossly underestimated Mariners’ defence finally did their magic. Greg Halman charged Rich Thompson, homered to centre to earn the third run and give a crucial 3-1 lead to the Mariners.
Pauley who had given up the only run to the Angels was relieved by Brandon League. He did not falter to preserve the precious 3-1 lead and pitched a scoreless inning to secure a hard earned 3-1 victory for the Seattle Mariners.
