Seattle Mariners defeat New York Yankees 9-2 to avoid series sweep – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners punched nine devastating runs to overpower the New York Yankees 9-2, at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, July 27 to avoid a series sweep.
Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez made a crushing start and held the Yankees scoreless in his first four innings. Mariners’ second baseman, Dustin Ackley led off the game with his RBI single off Yankees’ starter Phil Hughes in the top of the third inning.
Ackley scored another single in the top of the fifth inning to get a 2-0 lead.
Martin scored first run from the Yankees in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 2-1. After this run, the Yankees again began to struggle against Hernandez. Mariners on the other hand, crushed the Yankees’ pitchers in the top of the seventh inning.
Ackley again participated with his grounder to start a five-run seventh inning. Mike Carp took the impetus into the next level with his RBI triple and Franklin Gutierrez added an RBI single to finalise the seventh inning 7-1.
In the eighth inning, Robinson Cano grounded out to short-stop, allowing Curtis Granderson to score the second run, but the Yankees did not convert this run and remained scoreless until the end of the game.
Mariners’ batting line-up carried their momentum, as Adam Kennedy and Carp each scored an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to cement their commanding win 9-2.
"These guys haven't felt good in a long time," manager Eric Wedge said. "We've got a long flight, an off day tomorrow and this is a real big win for us. When you've got a monkey on your back that size, it's d**n hard to get it off."
However, Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was not upset with such a humiliating defeat.
Girardi said, "When I look back on what our club has done this year, and when I look back 20 years from now, I probably am not going to remember it. They were going to win a game at some point. We didn't play well, and that's why we got beat."
Hernandez allowed one run on five hits, walked four and struck-out five batters over seven innings to snatch his ninth win of the season. Jeff Gray yielded one run on one hit over one inning while closer Brandon League tossed a perfect ninth inning, without
allowing any run.
Phil Hughes had another bad day, as he allowed nine hits to consume two runs struck-out only three batters over six innings. He lost his third game of the season and dropped to 1-3 with extremely high 8.24 ERA.
Cory Wade and Boone Logan were the victims of the fifth inning. Wade went for two runs and Logan consumed three runs. Luis Ayala tossed a scoreless inning. Hector Noesi went for two runs on three hits over one inning.
