Seattle Mariners defeat Tampa Bay Rays, 8-2 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners were extraordinary throughout the day as the batters put runs on the score-board by hitting home runs while the pitchers threw in good line to give the Mariners an 8-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field, Seattle on June 2.
It was the first win for the Mariners in a four-game series. The first inning passed without any runs as the batters hit score-less shots. The Mariners stepped on the gas during the second inning and exploded five runs to get a 5-0 lead. Jack Cust hit a
one-run homer to right centre-field. Chone Figgins singled to right-field, as Franklin Gutierrez scored a single run and Adam Kennedy shifted to second base.
Carlos Peguero homered to centre-field while Kennedy and Figgins both singled to complete a five-run campaign. In the third inning, the Mariners took a 6-0 lead when Kennedy doubled towards right-field and Cust scored one run.
Fourth inning again went in favour of the Mariners as they extended their lead 8-0 by adding two runs. Peguero homered to left-centre and Justin Smoak struck a one-run homer off right-field to lift the potential of their team. No score was added in the fifth
inning.
On the other side, the Rays were score-less until the fifth inning. They broke the silence of their fans in the sixth inning when Felipe Lopez singled to shallow centre and Evan Longoria posted one run. The score-card moved to 8-1 at the end of sixth. The
pitchers were on top during the seventh inning as they did not permit a run.
In the eighth inning, the Rays were able to add only one run on their score-board to cut their deficit, when Matt Joyce homered to right-field. The game ended at 8-2 as the batters failed to score in the ninth inning.
Felix Hernandez pitched seven solid innings with an ERA of 3.04 and allowed just one run on five hits including one earned run. He struck out 11 batters and gave two walks on 97 pitches. The relievers also co-operated well as they permitted only one run
in their combined two inning pitches.
The Rays’ starter, James Shields was too much expensive as he threw four innings and gave eight runs on seven hits with seven earned runs.
