Seattle Mariners edge Kansas City Royals 7-6 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners completed an emphatic series sweep of the Kansas City Royals as they edged them 7-6 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, July 29 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Mariners continued their supremacy in the finale to secure another thrilling victory. Credit should be given to them for dominating their opponents throughout the series.
"These are the types of games you're glad you're the home team and get those final at-bats," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Ultimately we had some guys step up late."
Royals, on the other hand, will be disheartened after taking yet another humiliating loss. Manager Ned Yost will be an extremely worried man these days. Kansas City’s offence, in particular, has not been able to live to its immense potential.
Alcides Escobar singled to left in the third to put the Royals on the board. Escobar drove in another crucial run in the fifth to keep his side in the contest.
Billy Butler singled to centre in the eighth to add spice to the proceedings. Showing great composure and determination, Eric Hosmer earned a two run single in the eighth to level the score as the game entered a very interesting phase.
"This one hurt, we needed to win this game," Hosmer said. "It's a tough road trip for us but a good off day tomorrow, get things going at home."
But Mariners were not prepared to give up. Trayvon Robinson and Casper Wells scored in the eighth to give their team a well deserved series sweep.
Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez pitched seven effective innings, allowed just two runs with six strike-outs.
"A little bruised. It's fine," said Hernandez, who was injured by a line drive. "They were not going to take me out today."
Despite their series sweep, Seattle is placed fourth on the American League West Division standings. In MLB, things change very quickly and it will be interesting to see if Mariners can continue their impressive winning over the next couple of months to
have any chance of making it to the playoffs.
The Royals will be disappointed with their performance as they struggled to get their offence to fire. The team will be looking to improve their performance and become more competitive in the crucial innings.
