Seattle Mariners finally get Jesus Montero – MLB News
The swap deal that the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees had mutually agreed to was finalised on Monday, January 23. The Seattle Mariners’ general manager Jack Zduriencik made an announcement in this regard, saying that the team needed a really good
player.
The swap deal which involved Jesus Montero and Michael Pineda appears to have gone well for the Seattle Mariners. Montero’s arrival in the team gives them a boost thanks to the fact that he is considered the Number one catching prospect lately.
Montero is being put forward by the game pundits as a player that will add to the seemingly fragile Seattle Mariners’ offence. As words have it, the player is a powerful hitter, having a .328 batting average. Tall and stout, at 6ft 3in and 112.5kg, he comes
across as a dependable designated hitter and a tremendous catcher.
Pineda, who will now be the part of the New York Yankees, has remained part of the All-Star as a rookie. His inclusion in the New York Yankees will help charge up the defence against their rivals in the American League.
The swap might have also been financially costly, but the Seattle Mariners’ general manager finds it ultimately rewarding for the team in the long run. Pineda and Montero’s swap is thus a trade of talent for talent.
"We had a need, and to get a really good player, you have to give up good players," Zduriencik said once the deal was announced following completion of Montero's physical exams. "Neither one of us was trying to walk away from this thinking we got the upper
hand. There were no contracts involved, it was strictly talent for talent."
Zduriencik vows he will give the player opportunity to prove his worth both as a catcher and hitter. "We'll give him an opportunity to be all he can be, whatever that will be," Zduriencik said. "He's a smart kid and a talented hitter, and he'll get every
opportunity to catch as well.”
What is manifestly clear is that the Mariners have made a smart move at the right time; paving the way for a strong show with a competitive roster for the regular season.
