Seattle Mariners hang on as closer David Aardsma prepares for surgery
The Seattle Mariners have a hard task ahead of them in the upcoming season and it appears to be one of the toughest tenures the club could head for in 2011. They face stiff competition from the regional rivals in the American League West Division.
They have been looking to add firepower to their ranks in the winter break but much of their concern has been looking after players who are currently injured on the roster. David Aardsma is one such player who has been aching badly over the recent weeks
and his surgery on Monday could lead the club to some answers concerning his presence on the team roster in 2011.
The 29-year-old will undergo a surgery to repair a labrum tear in his left hip. Mariners General Manager, Jack Zduriencik said the player will be back to pitching for the side in 4 weeks and that will closely tie him up with the spring training period.
There have been rumours on the player possibly going elsewhere this season on a trade deal. Nevertheless, David is keeping a look out on his health and would love nothing more than to get back to pitching.
"I follow the (websites) to see which of my friends are being traded and all that, so you can't not see it if you're paying attention," David Aardsma said. "It's hard to miss. But here's the thing. That's the team's deal. I'm happy where I'm at. I love Seattle.
If they go that route, that's reality. It wouldn't be my first rodeo. I'm just worried about getting ready to pitch by Opening Day, wherever that will be."
David also talked about the expected recuperating time and his pitching plan when the surgery is done.
"It's too far away to judge," he said. "But from where I should start throwing to our first (preseason) game is four weeks. So it just depends. It's a lot easier as a reliever to be game ready as far as actual arm strength. If you're a starter, that's more
of a concern. For me, the biggest thing is, if I can throw back-to-back days and have a consistent release point, then I'm game ready."
