Seattle Mariners hit back with 12-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians – MLB Update
Dustin Ackley had three RBIs in the second game of the night on Tuesday, August 23 to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 12-7.
Losing the first game by 7-5 – a loss that was avoidable, the Mariners bounced back into action in the second to score an emphatic victory.
Although Anthony Vasquez did not throw as efficiently as was expected, allowing six runs, he had enough support on his back to guide the team to a victory. "I'll take it," Wedge said. "Vasquez didn't quite have the command I wanted to see, but that first
time out is always a mulligan. He got us a win so good for him."
Bottom of second, Kosuke Fukudome homered to right to score the first run for the Cleveland Indians against Anthony Vasquez. As the team got their lead, what seemed impossible was to maintain it given the resurgent Mariners’ offence.
As soon as Zach McAllister came on the mound to pitch the third, Franklin Gutierrez scored a two run single to left while Dustin Ackley scored his first RBI subsequently, giving the team 3-1 lead. Before McAllister could settle, Mike Carp homered to take
the lead to 5-1 for the Mariners.
Shin-Soo Choo who had hit a winning three-run homer a few hours back had another homer, bringing the Mariners lead down to 5-2. But the Mariners hit back in the fourth as the offence sprang into action once again.
Franklin Gutierrez scored a single followed by a two-run RBI coming off Dustin Ackley’s bat and a single by Wily Mo Pena that gave the Seattle Mariners an enviable 10-2 lead in the second game of the night.
Runs kept coming as Jason Donald and Lou Marson scored a single each for the Indians in the fourth. After McAllister, Frank Herrmann was brought in to pitch for the Indians, but even he could not stop Trayvon Robinson from scoring a single to shallow centre,
making it 11-4 for the Seattle Mariners.
Vasquez was not relieved and allowed to pitch into the sixth inning where he allowed a run to Jack Hannahan first and then to Ezequiel Carrera. But after that, the relievers pitched well to keep the 11-7 lead intact for the Mariners while Kyle Seager homered
to make it 12-7.
"That's what we do," said the Mariners’ manager Wedge, who has 12 rookies on his 25-man roster. "We had to come back from that. We're playing a team that's in the mix and our kids are playing good baseball."
Jeff Gray was brought as a closer to pitch the 9th inning whereby he gave up only a hit and did not allow any runs to the Indians to wrap up the game with a 12-7 victory.
