Seattle Mariners looking to new talent Erasmo Ramirez – MLB News
The Seattle Mariners’ pitching coach Carl Willis on Wednesday, February 15, voiced his confidence in the emerging young pitcher Erasmo Ramirez, calling him a plus strike thrower. This 5ft 10in player has already charmed the Spring Training camp with his
deceptive pitches.
It is interesting to observe that of the top prospects in the MLB, the Mariners already have four in the elite list. Ramirez, who hails from Nicaragua, is one of the Draft picks that the Mariners have carefully selected.
"No doubt," Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis said at the start of camp. "I saw him in Low A ball when I first came here as coordinator. He's a plus strike thrower. He's deceptive because of his size, with the velocity he can get. He creates some angle.
He has such a good feel for his secondary stuff for a young kid.”
Ramirez’s exceptional aptitude lies in the fact that he is shorter than the pitchers being tipped as the likely starters and relievers for this season. His short height is in no way a disadvantage for the velocity and potency of the pitches.
Rather, the pitcher who was called by the Mariners when he was merely 17-year-old is holding the key for the team’s success once he formally begins playing. Like Willis who believes he will be a surprise for many, the team manager Eric Wedge likes everything
about the pitching of this young player.
"Impressive," Wedge said. "I like the way he stays in his delivery. He stays in that slot. And you can tell there is a competitiveness there, an edge, that you have to like.”
Only recently did the pitcher get a chance in the Venezuelan Winter League whereby he had an impressive 1.48 ERA with two wins to his credit. The pitcher allowed only one walk in over 30 innings that he pitched.
The Mariners which are in the re-building phase has relied heavily on the young players this time. That can be seen by having a look at the roster which is replete with the names of the young and energetic players. What fans will definitely look forward
to is the strong show by these players on the field during the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
