Seattle Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge reflects on recent 5-4 win over Minnesota Twins
The Seattle Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge had a lot to say about his team’s recent 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, September 21 at Target Field.
The visiting Mariners pulled off five runs in the sixth and the seventh inning to put the club on the vantage point for the important win.
Kevin Slowey pitched well for the Minnesota Twins and he led a five scoreless innings feat into the sixth inning. He was however on the losing end of the park as Ichiro Suzuki led a scoring campaign against the hurler. The Japanese star scored the first
run and then Dustin Ackley provided a double to lead an equalising run from Kyle Seager. Wedge called that the changing moment in the game.
"The kid is a strikethrower," said Wedge. "We did a better job the third time around. Ichi got us going and then Seager really backspun the ball the other way and Ackley did the same. When a kid is throwing like that, you've got to recognize what he's doing
the first and second time around and make some adjustments."
The Mariners however had trouble in the later innings as Tom Wilhelmsen punished with a run from Trevor Plouffe on a Brian Dinkelman single. He got back into the game with three outs. Brandon League also faced a similar situation as he conceded a run to
Michael Cuddyer in the bottom of the ninth. The hurler however retired Brian Dinkelman to end the game with hitters on the first two bases.
Wedge credited the Twins to raise their game against the bull-pen rotation. He also hailed his relief pitchers who worked out a win in the end.
"Right to the end both days," Wedge said. "But in the end, it's black and white. Leaguer got it done."
The skipper concluded by saying that getting five innings of play from the bull-pen hurlers and winning the fixture says a lot about the effort put in. He was pleased with the fine performance from his team.
