Seattle Mariners pull off nine runs in third inning to beat Cleveland Indians 12-6
The Seattle Mariners were up to their best when they took out the Cleveland Indians 12-6 on Monday, September 19 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. First baseman Mike Carp gathered the attention of the crowd as he steered a magnificent grand slam in the
top third to end the inning with nine runs going to the Mariners.
Indians were fighting for the second position in the American League Central. The Mariners were not looking for anything but recognition in front of the opposition’s home crowd. Manager Eric Wedge was proud to see his men dominate the Indians and move on
to good standing in the hitting positions.
David Huff moved on to his sixth starter loss in the season as he gave away nine runs off seven hits and three balls in 2.2 innings. He had the worst night of his career, as far as his Major League experience goes. Seattle’s Charlie Furbush, was not on his
best performance stance on Monday, either. The hurler gave up six runs in 10 hits and one walk. He did however pick up the winner as Huff squandered his control on the Cleveland end.
Things looked very good for the Indians early on as the club managed to pack three runs in the bottom of the first. Asdrubal Cabrera smashed a two run homer to kick off the scoring trail. He led Jason Donald home with two runs on the score board. Carlos
Santana came in immediately after Cabrera to smash a similar homer down left-field.
Furbush looked uneasy at the mound but a coach visit got him stable. He got through the innings easily after allowing the first two runs. Seattle was hot on the reply as Alex Liddi smashed a two run homer to left-field. The first Italian player for almost
50 years led in Wily Mo Pena for two important runs.
The score was now 3-2 and the Indians were still in the lead. They extended their lead to 4-2 when Cabrera smashed a double to left-field to lead Donald in for the fourth run. Things however immediately changed in the top of the third.
First baseman, Mike Carp came in to lead Luis Rodriguez to a run with a line drive double to the centre. Kyle Seager came in later to single on a ground ball, paving the way for Carp to run home in style.
Bases were then loaded by Huff as Seager ran to third base, Wily Mo Pena was allowed to walk on to base and Liddi moved to first base with a single. Huff got a visit from the coach but that had a bad effect on the Indians as Seager and Pena scored the fifth
and the sixth run on a Trayvon Robinson two run RBI single.
A fly-out later, Ichiro Suzuki drove in the seventh run of the night with a double to the left, leading Liddi in. Huff had done all the damage he could to the Indians and manager Manny Acta was not going to take a chance. He was replaced with Chad Durbin
and the reliever made a bad show on his part as well.
He walked Rodriguez and loaded the bases up for Mike Carp. The Mariners in-fielder was up to the task as he slammed a defiant grand slam to right-field. The score was now 11-4.
With a big deficit on the scoreboard, Travis Hafner replied for the Cleveland team in the bottom fifth, with a two-run RBI double. He led Carlos Santana and Cabrera in for two runs.
The Mariners were however still in the mix as they scored their 12th and final run of the game through Miguel Olivo in the top of the sixth. The catcher ran home after Wily Mo Pena drove a single to centre-field.
The scored ended on 12-6 and the Mariners kicked off their latest series with a tremendous victory. They looked strong and will give the Indians a real chase for the silverware in the American League Central.
