Seattle Mariners re-sign relief pitcher Oliver Perez – MLB Update
After playing consistently throughout the 2012 Major League Baseball season, Seattle Mariners’ relief pitcher Oliver Perez gets another year to perform.
The Mariners’ management has re-signed him for another season worth almost $1.5 million with an additional $600,000 in performances bonuses.
Oliver Perez was a free agent before his negotiations went smooth with the Mariners. Earlier speculations rose that the Mariners’ management and his agent had some issues to resolve on Perez contract’s various clauses but now it has been confirmed that all the sides have no concerns and Perez’s deal surely will give him another season to perform for Seattle.
Perez is an experienced campaigner and knew his worth when he was negotiating with the Mariners. He performed well in the recent past season and knew he had a strong case and will be getting a handsome contract.
Even during the regular season, Perez indicated that will be likely to play again for the Mariners next season.
"In my mind, I just wanted to show myself that I could still do it, I wanted to show a lot of people in Mexico, too. I think a lot of them there were very disappointed in me. I was disappointed, too. I'm just going to do the same thing I did last winter,” Perez said.
Now since he has a new contract in hand, he will be giving his best for the Mariners.
Mariners' GM Jack Zduriencik was happy when he spoke to the media regarding Perez’s new deal, “He did a very nice job in helping solidify our bullpen after his call-up last summer, As a veteran left-hander and one that had adjusted very nicely to his new role, we are looking forward to his contributions as we go into the 2013 campaign.''
Perez finished 2012 season with 2.12 ERA along with 24 strike-outs and 1.25 WHIP. While his 4.57 career ERA, 1150 strike-outs and 1.48 WHIP also makes him a good role player in the league.
Perez joined the Mariners in 2012 after playing with New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres in the Major League.
