Seattle Mariners’ reliever Tom Wilhelmsen intends to keep consistent approach – MLB News
The Seattle Mariners’ reliever Tom Wilhelmsen said on Tuesday, February 14, that he will have the same approach that was adopted during the past year. Responding to the questions pertaining to the new season plans, one of the top relievers of the team commented
that last year was both exciting and nervous for him.
"I think I have the same approach," Wilhelmsen said, expressing his views on how things might have changed in a year. "Last year was more exciting, maybe a little more nervous. Those jitters aren't here. It's just do what I can do and hopefully I'll pick
up where I left off."
For many of the Seattle Mariners fans who religiously follow their team, it is barely surprising that Wilhelmsen had remained a former bartender prior to emerging as a Major League debutant in the club.
The reliever proved to be the right choice, demonstrating professionalism since the time he was inducted in the team. For instance, he appeared in 25 games in 2011, winning two games without losing any with a 3.31 ERA.
The consistency of his performance will guarantee that he will become a closer soon. This is an observation that the general manager Jack Zduriencik has also recently made.
Besides, it is not only Wilhelmsen that pulls attention. Steve Delabar is another name that the Seattle Mariners have in the 40-man roster. Previously a teacher by profession, his ability to rise to formidable challenges of Major League Baseball is tremendous.
With his strict strengthening program, he is able to be in the rotation that the Mariners shall use this season. “It helped to have a set goal,” he said. “Last offfseason I really didn't get a chance to do a strength program like I would have wanted because
I didn't see where I needed to go.”
Getting six appearances during the past year, he maintained a 2.57 ERA in the seven innings that he pitched, having seven strike-outs. While the tall pitcher has the ability to outclass any hitter, it is indeed a matter of time before he gets a regular chance
in the Major League to demonstrate his brilliance.
