Seattle Mariners rout Cleveland Indians 9-2 – MLB Update
The Cleveland Indians fumbled on Wednesday, August 24 and lost the game by a 9-2 margin to the Seattle Mariners at Progressive Field.
Losing six of the last seven games they have played, the Indians also lost the four-game series by 3-1.
Since the April 3, this is the worst ever performance of the Cleveland Indians. Although nothing positive favours them right now as the things stand, the team manager still holds optimism and thinks things will gradually improve.
"I still feel like we have a good streak in us," manager Manny Acta said, staying positive. "We've still got to play the games. We have to get out there and fight."
Exhibiting sheer professionalism in his approach to counter the negative impact of back-to-back loses he commented. "You can't sit here and feel sorry for yourself," he said. "It's tough without Brantley and Kipnis and Hafner and Sizemore and now Choo, but
you have to continue to play."
Josh Tomlin, one of the best starters of the Indians, had to leave the pitching spell before the sixth – for the first time in this season as Wily Mo Pena drove in four runs for the Mariners while Felix Hernandez struck-out 10 that changed the map of the
game.
Shelley Duncan was the first one to score for the Indians at the bottom of third on Wednesday as the Seattle starter had packed the first two innings scoreless. But the otherwise fast going Josh Tomlin who had pitched three scoreless innings tumbled in the
fourth.
Wily Mo Pena homered to take the Mariners past the Indians with a 2-1 lead. Though Jack Hannahan levelled the score in the fourth, the Mariners’ offence chased the Indians’ Josh Tomlin in the fifth, putting him into an awkward position.
Miguel Olivo singled to centre to score the tiebreaking run while Kyle Seager had a single to make it 4-2 for the Mariners. This was followed by Wily Mo Pena’s two-run double that took up the lead to 6-2 for the Seattle Mariners by the end of the fifth.
Joe Smith relieved Tomlin soon afterwards while Felix Hernandez kept pitching, allowing no space to the Indians’ hitters to score. Rafael Perez was to pitch the seventh for the Cleveland Indians and it proved costly too.
Ichiro Suzuki was first to score while Brendan Ryan followed with a two-run triple that took the lead to 9-2 for the Mariners. Jamey Wright of the Mariners pitched the next inning scoreless to maintain the lead.
Josh Lueke, coming as a closer, tossed unplayable pitches to end the disastrous series for the Indians with the Mariners 9-2 victory.
