Seattle Mariners shutout Detroit Tigers 2-0 – MLB News
Detroit Tigers were beaten by the Seattle Mariners 0-2 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Friday April 19 in the finale of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers outclassed the Mariners in first two games of the series and they had an excellent chance to complete a deserving series sweep but that did not turn out to be the case as the Mariners showed incredible fighting skills to end the series on a positive
note. Tigers will be disappointed with the outcome of the game. The pitching rotation, once again, created all sorts of problems for the Mariners but the batting line up failed to live up to the expectations.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Tigers are one of the strongest teams in the American League. They secured the AL Central Division title comfortably last year and it will be interesting to see if they can continue the good work throughout this season to
win their third straight AL Central title but Manager Jim Leyland will not look to settle for anything less than a World Series title in 2013.
"It's not a normal situation where you pinch hit, but I felt like any opportunity, albeit slight, you're going to take advantage of it," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.
"I was going straight in on my slide," said Kyle Seager who drove in crucial runs. "The ball bounced in front of the plate and he leaned back to catch the hop, which opened it up for me to catch the corner (of the plate)."
"It was the right time, right place, (Seager) comes in with a big hit," said closer Tom Wilhelmsen after completing his sixth save.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander had a great time on the mound as he allowed just two runs in seven solid innings but the night belonged to the Mariners and Verlander ended up taking his second loss of the season. His counterpart from Mariners,
Hisashi Iwakuma produced a magical performance allowing just three hits in six scoreless innings. Reliever Carters Capps grabbed his win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings.
