Seattle Mariners stun Los Angeles Angels 5-3 in opening game – MLB Update
The American League’s Seattle Mariners surprised the Los Angeles Angels beating them 5-3 in the series-starter at Safeco Field in Seattle on Monday, August 29 to take a 1-0 lead in the four-game series.
Mariners kept the lead in the first inning and then carried it until the end. Their starter Blake Beavan provided strong back up to batting line-up to help his club win their 57th win of the regular season.
Ichiro Suzuki went to second with a ground rule double and then moved to third with a single of Franklin Gutierrez. Dustin Ackley found it an easy chance and stroked a sacrifice fly to left-field, Gutierrez got out at the second but Suzuki managed to get
first run for his club in the bottom of the first. In the next inning, Miguel Olivo was on third base when Kyle Seager entered the plate and hit a sacrifice fly on the first pitch he faced. Olivo scored and Mariners earned 2-0 lead.
With two runs at his back, the Mariners’ starter Blake worked solid three innings before allowing a two-run homer to Mark Trumbo in the fourth. He then allowed an RBI single to Erick Aybar and the Angels snatched back the lead.
Angels were leading 3-2 at the end of the fourth. However, Mariners’ batting camp again utilised a base stealing technique to tie the game at 3-all. Suzuki occupied second base touching a grounder to deep centre and then Dustin Ackley tripled to deep right-centre,
scoring Suzuki for third run.
Mariners were having a chance to get the lead as Ackley was on third base but Mike Carp grounded out to first base to close the inning.
Beavan then completed his seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and walking none in his seven innings. He handed the ball to Tom Wilhelmsen, who tossed a no-hitter eighth in the crucial time to get the win.
On the other hand, Carp launched a dazzling two-run homer to elevate the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mariners’ closer Brandon League threw perfect top ninth to get his 32nd win of the season.
This loss has put the Angels into back foot as they now have to make winning comeback to be able to get closer to Texas Rangers for post season competition.
