Seattle Mariners thrash San Diego Padres 9-0 at Safeco Field on Memorial Day- MLB News
Seattle Mariners thrashed the San Diego Padres 9-0 at the Safeco Field on Monday 27, 2013 in front of a nearly 19000 crowd on Memorial Day. The Mariners now have a 22-29 win-loss record in 2013.
The game was in the control of the home team from the word go as they had added four runs on the board by the end of the first innings. They maintained control and added one more run in the fourth before scoring another four in the bottom of the seventh.
Starting pitcher Aaron Harang was most impressive. Aaron threw down the whole game and recorded his first shutout in four years. The 34-year-old only surrendered four hits in nine innings to show his command over the plate.
Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge was full of praise for the veteran pitcher who recorded his second win of the season and maintains a 2-5 win-loss record. Eric felt that the pitcher was able to show tremendous control and moved the pitches the way he wanted
to.
"Aaron was outstanding today," Wedge said. "You could tell early on he had good stuff. The biggest difference was he was hitting his spots all day. He did a great job with his fastball on both sides of the plate, elevated every now and again.”
The pitcher himself was joyous and said that the Mariners’ batters had been doing there jobs for a while and he felt that it was time for the starting pitchers to take their responsibility and deliver.
"The guys have been swinging the bats great, putting runs on the board, and the starters, we kind of talked the other day and said, 'We've got to pick this up,'" Harang said.
He surely did that and made sure that the excellent hitting by the offensive lineup was even more highlighted by his good efforts.
The batting efforts contained no less than three home-runs. Right fielder Jason Bay got things moving with a solo effort in the bottom of the first.
He got the nod of approval from the manager who was pleased to see the 34-year-old lead things off for the batters to follow.
"Jason Bay did a great job of being aggressive and staying in the middle of the field with his first AB there leading off," Wedge said.
Michael Morse then got a three-run home-run to make the lead 4-0. Another long ball in the fourth by Kelly Shoppach added more to the Mariners’ grip. Some indifferent fielding and good hitting saw the Seattle ballclub add another four in the seventh innings.
The Mainers certainly have made a strong statement and are gaining some much needed momentum at this point in time. They will surely be looking to cut the nine game difference between them and the leaders of American league West Texas Rangers.
