Seattle Mariners weighing Vinnie Catricala’s role in team – MLB News
The Seattle Mariners manage Eric Wedge said on Wednesday, February 15, that the club intends to try Vinnie Catricala at both third base and the outfield. The young, agile, well-built and powerful hitter has established himself through his tremendous performances.
In 2011 the 23-year-old player was declared the Mariners’ Minor League Player of the Year. What factored into this wonderful display of the game is his ability to aggressively go against every rival team in the Minor League.
Vinnie Catricala had maintained an average of .349 throughout the season with 106 RBIs to his credit, scoring 101 which also included 25 home-runs while he was in Class A and Double-A.
The flair that was manifested has already enabled him to participate in this year’s Spring Training where the 6ft 3in player has had his practicing sessions. The fact that he is being tipped as the most likely prospect for this year’s Major League, he is
working on third base and the outfield.
"We're going to see a lot of him at third base in regard to reps he's taking," Wedge said. "We're going to take a good look at him there and a good look at him in the outfield as well. We like the way he swings the bat and his size. He has a presence about
him that you have to like with any young player.”
In his Minor League career, Vinnie Catricala has had 133 games at third base. All the same, he had 59 outfield games coupled with that of 88 at first base.
Despite having shown considerable success in every position that he has played so far, the team is cautiously treading the path forward when it comes to the Major League.
Among an array of young players that has been named for the 40-man roster, the Mariners choice of Vinnie Catricala seems one of the sagacious moves that will guarantee success for the team. It will be interesting to see the impact Catricala will have for
the Mariners during Spring Training and quite possibly in the 2012 MLB regular season.
