Seattle Seahawks DE Chris Clemons rejects offered extension, team denies report – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons has reportedly rejected the team’s offer of a three-year contract extension valuing around $18 million, but the team has denied this report saying it has not received any formal rejection from the player.
Clemons, who joined the Seahawks in a trade in 2010, has been leading the team in sacks in the last two seasons.
In the 2010 season, he played and started 16 games in which he recorded a total of 49 tackles and 11.0 sacks.
He played and started the same number of games last year as well and recorded a total of 51 tackles and 11.0 sacks.
He still has one year left in his contract and will make $4 million base salary in 2012.
He has been seeking a long-term job security with a hefty contract from the team and missed this season’s offseason activities in protest.
He is so serious in his demand that he even missed the mandatory minicamp that cost him a penalty of $100,000.
Seahawks reportedly offered him a three-year contract extension. The team was willing to restructure the last year of his deal besides adding two more with additional benefits and increased salary.
According to different reports, Seahawks have not yet received any formal rejected from the player and they are confident that the player would agree to the offer.
Recently, Seahawks general manager John Schneider discussed Clemons’ deal issue on "Chalk Talk" with Doug Farrar and Rob Rang on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle.
The GM said of the player and his situation:
"What I can share with you guys is that we've had dialogue with Chris and his agent. It's all been positive. You know, he elected not to come to the camp, that's his prerogative. He's got a year left on his contract, he's very talented, he's a very important
part of what we're doing. And we'll try to do what's in the best interest of the organization."
Meanwhile, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is also confident that the player will be back. He said recently:
“We feel like everything’s been on the up and up and very amicable and all that. So it continues to be one of our priorities and we’d love to get him back.”
