Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to start against Kansas City Chiefs – NFL News
As their evaluating of the quarterbacks present on the roster continues, Seattle Seahawks have surprisingly decided to give rookie Russell Wilson his first National Football League (NFL) start as head coach Pete Carroll announced on Tuesday, August 21, 2012
that Wilson will start Friday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Carroll said of Wilson:
“It’s just exciting to watch this kid play. His ability to make first downs, sometimes throwing the football and sometimes with his legs, has been obvious.”
The Chiefs have one of the best defensive units in the entire league and it will be a tough challenge for the rookie to take on such a defence. However, he can get in the good books of the management if he impresses the observers.
The rookie is upbeat about the opportunity. He got some time to spend on the field during the first two preseason games, but this will be his first start. He thinks that the practice with the Seahawks’ defensive unit during training has helped him a lot.
He said:
“It definitely helps to go against our defence. Our defence is pretty spectacular. They fly around. We’ve got a great defensive line, great linebackers and, obviously, some great DBs, as well. So it’s a good experience for me throughout the week to go against
our No. 1 defence.”
Seahawks have been in the limelight for their quarterback competition throughout the preseason and it looks like the management has not yet reached a final decision.
Seahawks started their first two preseason games with Matt Flynn. The former Green Bay Packers’ quarterback was supposed to start only in the first preseason game, but Carroll wanted to further evaluate him and hence he gave Flynn another start.
Tarvaris Jackson, who started for them last year, has not started for them this preseason. Carroll had earlier said that since the management was already aware of Jackson’s performance, they were willing to give more playing time to the other two quarterbacks.
With Jackson’s trade rumours doing the round, it is expected that Flynn or Wilson might earn the starting job. So far Flynn has been backed by many to win the starting role. However, Carroll is still not spilling the beans. He said:
"This is about competition. That’s what we’ve always been about. If somebody doesn’t see it that way, then they just don’t understand us.”
