Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson impresses head coach Pete Carroll, will compete for starting role
Seattle Seahawks’ quarterbacks, Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson, were supposed to compete against each other for the starting role in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season, but the competition will get tougher now as rookie, Russell Wilson, has
also entered the race.
Seahawks’ coach, Pete Carroll, was so impressed with Wilson during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp that he projected him to be the starting quarterback in future.
Seahawks had selected Wilson in third round of the 2012 NFL draft as 75th overall pick.
Initially it was not expected that he would be utilised at the starting position as Jackson and Flynn were already said to get the starting role.
Jackson spent the last season with the Seahawks and Flynn has recently moved to Seattle after leaving the Green Bay Packers, with whom his performance was very impressive in the limited opportunities he got.
With Wilson performing well during the minicamp, it will get even more difficult for the two to maintain their position.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Wilson took more than 500 snaps during the minicamp and sent around 400 passes and the coach is impressed with the way he handled the load.
Carroll said:
“It isn’t going to be because he can’t throw the football, because he can. He’s got a terrific arm. So we’ll just have to see where he fits as time goes on.”
He added:
"He showed us enough. He's in the competition. That is going to tax us, as we know. It was already going to be taxing with two, but he's shown us enough that we need to see where he fits in with these guys."
Carroll also said that he expected the player to perform well and commented:
“And we confirmed it in these three days. He left really no question about that he needs to be involved in this competition.”
The three-day minicamp ended yesterday and with coach singing Wilson’s praises, it will be seen during the training camp next month how the three quarterbacks perform.
At the moment, the veterans are not allowed to train with the rookies, but they will get an opportunity to prove their talent during the training camp before the start of the preseason games in presence of all the coaching staff.
