Seattle Seahawks and Marshawn Lynch agree to a four-year deal – NFL News Update
Seattle Seahawks signed running back, Marshawn Lynch, to a four-year deal on Sunday, March 4, 2012, with different reports suggesting the deal value to be $31 million, including $18 million guaranteed.
Seahawks’ general manager, John Schneider, made the announcement on Sunday, but no official word regarding the value of the contract was given either by the team or the player.
Lynch, who has spent two years with Seahawks, started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2007 Buffalo Bills.
After playing four seasons with Bills, he was traded to Seahawks.
In the last NFL season, Lynch staged his career best performance and remained a key component of Seahawks’ offensive unit.
He played 15 games in which he gained 1,204 yards for 12 touchdowns on 285 carries.
While commenting on the deal, Schneider said:
"We are excited to keep Marshawn as an important part of what we are building. This is what we were hoping for when we acquired him from Buffalo."
Seahawks could have also used their franchise tag on Lynch to keep the player for around a year with the team, but the management trusted his abilities and offered him a long stay, which he accepted with delight.
The decision was somewhat expected as Seahawks’ coach, Pete Carroll, had indicated during the NFL Scouting Combine that the team wanted to have association with Lynch for a long time.
When asked about what the management was planning to do with Lynch’s contract, Carroll said:
“We have big plans for him being with us. He knows that. And he understands that. And we’re just working it out right now.”
After the end of the last season, Lynch had also expressed a desire to stay with the franchise.
He said:
“I mean I would like to come back. Sure, I’d like to stay here. But that’s not up to me.”
Before receiving the contract, he also said:
“Everything’s going to fall into place. There’s not too much I can do about it but just wait.”
So now the matters revolving Lynch’s deal are pretty much clear and it is a good omen for the team as the deal has been reached by mutual consent.
