Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll wants to increase competition in his squad – NFL News
With the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft just around the corner, Seattle Seahawks’ head coach, Pete Carroll, has expressed a desire to increase competition in his squad so the new draft pick will have to compete hard to get starting role.
Carroll wants to develop his franchise into a competitive unit in which all the players must prove their abilities and skill to earn a starting position.
However, it seems that the team has not yet reached the stage where Carroll wants it. That being said, it must also be noted that Carroll has spent two seasons as the franchise’s head coach and the ownership is apparently satisfied with his philosophy.
Carroll, who has started relying on fresh talent now, considered young players as a threat to the team. However, he has changed his perception now and he thinks that young players can play a vital role in any team’s success.
He said of the change in his perception:
“One of my favourite coaches ever, Bud Grant, said one time, ‘For every young guy you start, you lose a game.’ That was classic, traditional thinking. I was of that mindset, in classic fashion, until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots. And then
it just flipped in me that we don’t know where we’re going if we don’t find these guys out.”
Carroll wants to select hire those players from the draft who will have to compete to get playing time. The head coach said that he wants the draft players to believe that the players who are already playing with the team are better.
Carroll said:
“That means the guys ahead of them are better. That’s what John [Schneider] has been advocating since we got together – getting this roster young and competitive and we’d see the benefits of it.”
Earlier, the head coach also asserted the need of competition between quarterback, Tarvaris Jackson, and the recently-acquired Matt Flynn and said that both players will have to compete to get the starting role in the next season.
Seahawks have a 12th round pick in the first round of the draft, which will start on Thursday, April 26 and end on Saturday, April 28.
