Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson excited about competing for starting role – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback, Russell Wilson, has expressed excitement over receiving an opportunity to compete for the starting role in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season against two other quarterbacks of the franchise.
Wilson, who was selected in third round of this year’s draft as 75th overall pick, was expected to serve as backup for Tarvaris Jackson and Matt Flynn. Both are more experienced than Wilson.
Jackson played the last season as Seahawks’ regular quarterback while Flynn joined the team during this offseason. He was playing as backup to Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers before arriving in Seattle.
Jackson and Flynn were expected to compete for the starting role in the upcoming season, but Wilson’s performance during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp completely startled the observers and head coach, Pete Carroll, said that he could get the starting role in future.
Now with the possibility of earning the starting role open for him, the rookie is up for giving his best to impress the coaches.
While talking to The Big 1070 in Madison, Wilson said of the coach’s comments about giving him the starting role:
“I’m excited about it. I mean, the key for me is just getting there and learning, getting around the guys and just being who I am. And not changing, just competing at the highest level that I can possibly compete at. Learn as much as I can from (Matt) Flynn and (Tarvaris) Jackson and it’ll be a great experience.”
Meanwhile, Wilson also rubbished the speculations that his short height is going to negatively affect his performance.
Wilson’s height is less than six feet, which is something unusual as far as NFL quarterbacks are concerned.
Most teams prefer having quarterbacks with height of over six feet, but Seahawks trusted Wilson’s abilities and selected him.
Wilson himself does not think that the short height brings bad omen to him and instead thinks that it makes him look cool.
He said:
“It makes it that much more unique and that much more cool in terms of the fact that I can play at a high level that I play at 5-11.”
Although, Wilson is still adapting to the professional conditions, he is capable of giving a tough competition to the other two quarterbacks.
