Seattle Seahawks release wide receiver Terrell Owens – NFL News
After all the buzz this offseason about the return of veteran wide receiver Terrell Owens to the National Football League (NFL), his hopes of playing in the league this season are seemingly over as Seattle Seahawks released him on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
The news first came out when Owens himself tweeted that he was no longer part of the Seahawks’ roster. He said:
“I'm no longer a Seahawk. I THANK the organization 4 the opportunity, I'm truly blessed beyond belief. My FAITH is intact & will NOT waiver.”
Seahawks’ decision came at a time when they desperately need to reduce the number of players on their roster.
Seahawks currently have 90 players on the roster while they need to reduce this number to 75 before Monday.
Owens’ release does not come as a surprise as he has failed to impress during the Seahawks offseason training camp as well as in the preseason games.
He managed to catch only two passes in the two preseason games he played, but most importantly he dropped many catches during those games.
Owens dropped a sitter which was a potential 46-yard run touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Matt Flynn in the game against Denver Broncos.
He also missed a sizzling opportunity against Kansas City Chiefs when Russell Wilson threw a 40-yard catch towards him.
Owens’ lack of good output came at a time when his competitor for the starting wide receiving post Braylon Edwards pushed his game to the next level.
Edwards gave a much better response to the addition of Owens. He looked far better as compared to the last season.
Talking about the departure of Owens, head coach Pete Carroll said:
"We really liked the group that we assembled. Terrell came in here and busted his tail and he looked really effective right from the start. But as we just took a look at our guys that are coming through the program and growing up with us we thought that
it would be best for us to stay with those guys."
With opportunity of playing in the league this season now almost gone, it may be the last time we have seen the 38-year-old veteran Owens on the field.
