Seattle Seahawks starting QB dilemma: Has Tarvaris Jackson got edge over Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson?
Seattle Seahawks have three quarterbacks on their roster at the moment and the management has not yet decided who will be their starter in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season.
The spot is open for competition between Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll has made it clear that he is not going to rush into making any decision and will see the performance of the three players before making the
final call.
However, different reports have suggested that Jackson might get the starting role while Flynn and Wilson will be the second and third-string quarterbacks respectively.
Keeping Jackson’s last year’s performance in mind, it might not be an ideal call for the Seahawks to go with the player once again.
Jackson played his first season with the Seahawks last year and appeared in 15 games while starting 14. In total, he completed 271 passes of 450 attempts for 3,091 yards while scoring 14 touchdowns. He also sent 13 interceptions and received the quarterback
rating of 79.2.
However, the Seahawks do not have any other option but to start with Jackson again in the 2012 season.
Let’s face it; Jackson is more experienced than the other two players. He has a six-year NFL experience on his resume and he has already played a season with the Seahawks. It means that apart from having more experience than the two, Jackson understands
the system relatively well.
Flynn, on the other hand, has only spent four seasons in the NFL. He is yet to play a game for the Seahawks and has never played as starter. Furthermore, his performance in the ongoing offseason is reportedly not as impressive as it should have been.
As for Wilson, he is just a rookie and he will need plenty of time to adjust into the system, learn playbook and get well acquainted with the playing condition before taking the starting role.
So as far as experience is concerned, Jackson certainly holds the edge. That said, it should also be noted that the coach has still not made his decision as he wants to be hundred percent of his choice sure before announcing it.
This provides cushion to both Flynn and Wilson to prove their talent as the offseason progresses and the team heads to its training camp.
By the looks of the things, Seahawks might announce the starter before preseason games and at the moment Jackson certainly has advantage over the other two players.
