Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback still not decided – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks have still not decided who their starting quarterback will be in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season with coach Pete Carroll saying that the competition between the three quarterbacks on the roster is still on.
Seahawks have an experienced quarterback in Tarvaris Jackson, who knows the system well and was their starter last year.
Other than him, Seahawks have Matt Flynn, who has joined the team this offseason. He previously played for the Green Bay Packers.
Although Flynn does not have a lot of experience, his performance during the games he played was more than enough to convince Seahawks to add him to the squad.
Seahawks also have a fresh player competing for the starting role in Russell Wilson who was added to the squad during this year’s draft.
The addition of the draft quarterback has increased the competition but the decision is only going to be made on merit.
Carroll told The News Tribune that he would monitor the performance of all three quarterbacks during organised team activities before making a final call.
He said:
“We need more turns, more snaps. We have balanced out the reps so far in really good fashion, and who they’re working with. What’s outstanding about it is all three guys are doing well, and they’re all making a pitch for staying in the competition.”
Referring to Wilson’s selection, the head coach said that the player is added only to provide depth to the roster and that the starting role has nothing to do with the draft selection.
He said:
“Draft picks and money and stuff like that is not going to play in the decision at all. We’re going to go with what it looks like through the competition and how they play, and the results of that, and how we feel about that.”
Whoever earns the starting role, the Seahawks are aware of the fact that they were short of options at the quarterback position last year and that eventually cost them the season as they were unable to qualify for the playoffs.
Be it Jackson, Flynn or Wilson, the three quarterbacks must give their best shot to earn the starting role as even a single mistake can ruin their chances.
