Seattle Seahawks top Carolina Panthers 16-12 as Cam Newton again falls short – NFL Recap
Seattle Seahawks defence once again rescued the team and took it to a victory as they defeated Carolina Panthers, 16-12, in Week 5 game on Sunday, October, 07, 2012, at Bank of America Stadium.
It was Panthers’ third straight and fourth overall defeat of the season. They are placed at third spot in National Football Conference (NFC) South after winning just one of their first five games.
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who had an outstanding season last year, is struggling, even after five games, to perform better.
Against Seahawks, he completed 12 of his 29 passes for 141 yards and was sacked four times.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera, however, is hopeful that the team and the quarterback will return to form soon. He said after the defeat:
"This is 1-4 and we're not going to quit. We're going to show up and we're going to be back on the job. We will find answers and we're going to win.”
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was also not very impressive as he struggled with accuracy, but the defence was solid enough to contain Panthers.
Wilson finished 19 of his 25 passes for 221 yards and scored one touchdown. Wilson also sent two interceptions. However, Wilson is consistently showing improvement in his game. He said after the win:
“I trust in what I’m doing. I trust the steps I’m taking every single day – to get there early, to watch tons of film and take tons of notes; all that attention to detail to be good at what you do.”
The defence was dominant for Seahawks right from the start. In the first quarter, Panthers were not allowed to create any scoring opportunity while the Seahawks settled with a field goal.
Seahawks got another field goal in the second quarter during which Panthers also scored a field goal.
Captain Munnerlyn ran for 33 yards to score on an interception return, giving a four-point lead to Panthers. However, Wilson sent a 13-yard pass to Golden Tate for a touchdown towards the end of the quarter to take the lead.
In the final quarter, Seahawks increased their lead by scoring a field goal. In the final quarter, Panthers earned two points when they tackled Seahawks’ Jon Ryan in his own end zone. No further scoring move was created in the game.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll praised his defence after the game and said:
“It was an extraordinary job by the D today. Because that is the most explosive team that we’ve faced. So a defensive effort like that is really, really a statement by our guys.”
Seahawks are 3-2 and still placed at the bottom of NFC West, tied with St. Louis Rams in terms of number of wins and defeats.
Seahawks are now going to face New England Patriots in Week 6 while Panthers will have a bye week.
