Seattle Seahawks unleashes secret weapon as they thrash Kansas City Chiefs – NFL Recap
When the news came out that Seattle Seahawks would not start with their quarterback Matt Flynn in the preseason game against Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, August 24, 2012, many thought that it would be a tough day for the Seahawks’ offence on the field.
Contrary to what was perceived, Seahawks’ offence had a gem of a game as they thumped the Chiefs 44-14, thanks to a remarkable performance by their rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.
Chiefs’ defence looked miserable against Wilson and gave away 37 points in the starting two and a half quarters.
Seahawks’ much anticipated running back Terrell Owens again failed to impress with his game. He was able to catch just two passes while covering 41 yards.
Seahawks had a great start to the game as they got two field goals as quarterback Wilson was having enough space to rip the Chiefs’ defence. Seahawks ended the first quarter 6-0
Offensive dominance of the Seahawks continued as they scored another field goal by kicker Steven Hauschka.
Then come the moment of brilliance by Wilson as he managed to get tight end Kellen Winslow for a 21-yard touchdown.
Chiefs opened their account with a touchdown by Matt Cassel as he went on to cover 80 yards and threw a pass to Dexter McCluster for a superb touchdown.
Wilson got back into the game and got another touchdown to make the score 23-7.
Seahawks started the second half of the game in exactly the same way they had started the first. Wilson threw a tantalising pass to Robert Turbin and he trickled pass the defensive line to score a 25-yard touchdown.
Towards the end of third quarter, wide receiver Golden Tate caught a punt and returned it for 92 yards as the score went 44-7.
Not much happened in the fourth quarter apart from Chiefs’ touchdown with less than two minutes left on the clock.
Wilson managed to score two touchdowns against Chiefs’ first team defence. He was very satisfied with his performance and said in his post-game comments:
"We did a great job tonight. We really came out and played a great game. A lot of enthusiasm, which is huge for our football team. Defense made some tremendous plays, stopping them on third downs and getting us the ball. We capitalized on some plays and
opportunities."
Contrary to what score line tells, Chiefs’ offence was not that bad either. Cassel managed to get a touchdown and was 19-of-34 for 168 yards.
Cassel was disappointed with his team’s overall performance. According to the Associated Press, Cassel said:
"Obviously we have to play better all around. It's disappointing to come out here and play like we did. I'm glad it's the preseason right now."
