Seattle Seahawks wrap up rookie contracts - NFL News
Seattle Seahawks wasted no time to end all contract distractions with their new draft picks as they quickly signed seven of their nine draft picks to new rookie contracts ahead of the preseason.
Just a day after first round draft pick and defensive end, Bruce Irvin put pen to paper on his new rookie deal the Seahawks announced the signing of seven more players.
Speaking to the team’s official website on Tuesday, the Seahawks chief negotiator, John Idzik seemed pretty pleased with his great day at the office.
Idzik talking about the quick signing of draft picks to new contracts said.
“There are a lot of factors at work, the primary one being the new CBA.”
Adding further he said, that in 2011 with the lockout ending so late negotiating new contracts was rushed by every franchise.
This year though the situation is different.
“So this isn’t the burn in, 2011 was and a lot of the rookie deals are now structured a certain way. So there was a little bit of precedent for everyone to go off of – both from a league standpoint as well as a club standpoint.”
He also said that it is better for all players to have the security of a new contract heading into training camp.
“That really was the driving force. It’s mutually beneficial. Obviously, we get our draft choices signed. But, from their end, they’re protected under their contract. They don’t have to concern themselves with these lengthy negotiations we’ve had in the
past.”
The completion of contract negotiations will allow the players to remove the distraction of their first National Football League (NFL) deals and concentrate completely on the game while training themselves to become an important part of the franchise’s roster
ahead of the new season.
The Seahawks ended last season with a poor 7-9 record and missed out on the playoffs after surging late in the season but their chance to make the playoffs ended after losing the last two games of the season.
This year though the franchise is optimistic heading into the new season and will look to their new rookies to deliver on the field.
