Seattle Sounders FC lose the Supporters’ Shield after a 2-0 defeat to Philadelphia Union – MLS News
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philadelphia-Union-c40231 on Saturday, October 8, at CenturyLink Field.
The Sounders squandered their chance of winning the Shield for the first time since their inception to the Major League Soccer.
The Union came strong in their last league match on the West Coast and broke the 0-0 deadlock in the second half. The Sounders put a strong defensive shift in the first half but were helpless in the second period, when Peter Nowak tinkered with the U’s line-up
at the half-time.
“I think we’ve had some emotional highs in the last two weeks and sometimes you come out a little bit flat and they were a little bit flat today, especially in the first half, and we left it for a little bit too late,” Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said.
Speaking of the ultra-competitive nature of the league, the tactician added: “It just serves as a reminder that in this league everything is so tight that if you come and aren’t wholly prepared to do all the work you need to do, you end up coming up short.”
It was a slim chance for the Sounders to clinch the Supporters’ Shield this season. The team was seven points behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Los-Angeles-Galaxy-c39818 and even if they had won all three games remaining in the league, it was a matter of a single win for the Galaxy to cement
their position atop the table.
The Sounders have secured a place for the 2012/13 CONCACAF Champions League, though, after winning the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday. The Rave Green are already in this year’s play-offs.
The team now hosts http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/San-Jose-Earthquakes-c40434 at the CenturyLink on Saturday, October 15. The game will mark goalkeeper Kasey Keller’s last home fixture with the Sounders.
The 2011 MLS season brings an end to the US veteran’s 22-year professional career. Keller will be commemorated for his services rendered to the league, at the Breast Cancer Awareness night on Monday.
